Defense is the strength of both of these teams as they both ended the season ranked #1 in their respective conferences in adjusted defensive efficiency. Both defenses also force opponents into long offensive possessions (ranked 339th and 351st in length of opponents average possession) which will should keep this game slow paced. Offensively, Rutgers is not a good shooting team. They rank outside the top 285 nationally in eFG%, 2 point FG%, and 3 point FG%. The Scarlet Knights topped 70 points only 12 times this season in 33 games and 5 of those offensive efforts came early (prior to December) in the non-conference season vs poor defensive teams. Hofstra’s offense has solid numbers but they haven’t faced a defense like this one. Rutgers allows just 55 PPG at home this season and they allowed only 3 teams to reach 60 points this year at Jersey Mike’s Arena in 18 games. We think Hofstra will struggle offensively in this game and even if Rutgers gets to 70 points, which they rarely do, we don’t see Hofstra getting deep into the 60’s if they get there at all.
