These two starters were a couple of the most consistent over the first half and they'll look to go into the break on a high note here, suffice it to say, when the smoke clears at the end of this one, I look for this total to sneak below the posted number.
The visitors hand the ball to Michael Wacha (10-3, 2.66 ERA) who gave up one run over seven innings in an unfortunate no-decision vs. San Diego on Friday; note that Wacha has now allowed just one run in each of his last two starts and has posted a minuscule 1.38 ERA in that span.
And note that Wacha has been particularly effective on the road this year, he's 6-2 with a 2.68 ERA away from friendly confines thus far.
The home side counters with Jason Hammel (5-4, 2.89 ERA) who gave up two runs off five hits over seven innings, to go along with five K's, a stat line clearly good enough to earn a victory, but he'd unfortunately take the loss in the end vs. the Fish on Friday.
But a date at home is just what the doctor ordered to get back into the winners circle for Hammel as he's posted a very respectable 2.25 ERA in Chicago so far this season.
I think these two competent starters battle into the latter frames and as such, I will indeed highly recommend a second look at the UNDER in this one.
