This is a 10* ASSASSIN on the Detroit Tigers.
For the most part, MLB handicapping comes down to starting pitching and in my opinion the visitors have a clear cut advantage on the mound and as such, I have no problem laying this very reasonable price on what I believe is the clearly superior starter. The visitors turn to Justin Verlander (10-10, 4.57 ERA); Verlander has had an up and down year, but he actually comes in with momentum, he's 2-2 with a respectable 3.14 ERA over his last four starts after giving up two runs and five hits over seven frames in his team's 5-1 road loss to the Yanks on Wednesday. Verlander has been a "win machine" vs. the Senior Circuit throughout his career, including in 2014, he'd give up two runs over eight frames in a 4-2 home win over the Rockies on August 1st; note that Verlander has in fact won each of his four outings vs. the NL this year and is a perfect 14-0 with a tiny 2.24 ERA in his last 16 regular-season interleague starts. Note that Verlander is 4-0 with a tiny 1.97 ERA in four meetings with the Bucs; and note that Verlander catches a break here in not having to face Pittsburgh slugger Andrew McCutchen and second baseman Neil Walker, both on the DL with injury. The Bucs come in with zero momentum, they were held to just five runs while dropping two of three to the Friars over the weekend and will send Jeff Locke (3-3, 3.78 ERA) to the mound; Locke most recently gave up three runs and a season-high tying seven Ks over seven frames in a 7-3 home win over the Fish on Wednesday. I think Locke will have his hands full today though vs. a hungry Tigers team which dropped two of three in Toronto, including falling apart in yesterday's game, allowing the Jays to rally from five down to win in 19 innings. I'm giving Verlander the slight nod on the bump and despite being "tired", give the Tigers the nod at the plate as well over the injured Pirates; play on DETROIT.
