We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account numerous different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. One set of criteria which we always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics.
This particular play is based primarily on strong/relevant O/U ATS statistics and common sense:
As note that Detroit has seen the total go OVER the number in five of seven already this year off an upset win as an underdog (the Pistons enter off a 108-101 home win over the Rockets as 6.5 point underdogs), while New Orleans has seen the total go OVER the number in six of eight following a loss by ten points or more this season and in 10 of 14 after allowing 115 points or more (the Pelicans come in off a 116-98 loss at Minnesota.)
The bottom line: These are two teams in desperate need of a victory. The Pistons are 21-17 overall, while the Pelicans are 19-19. We expect each of these non-conference opponents to push the pace from start to finish and for this one to indeed fly OVER as it comes down the stretch.
